Module 1.2: ...and what is the World Wide Web?

Introduction
This week we took a look at the World Wide Web which
refers to the information or documents that are sent or retrieved over the internet normally through a web browser. I learnt there are 3 key elements to the World Wide Web: The HTTP (Hypertext transfer protocol), the website URL (Uniform Resource Locator) address and the HTML (Hypertext markup language) markup language. With the term World Wide Web being coined by its maker Tim Berners-Lee.

Activity One - Show me the HTML!

Activity Part Two - Hypertext (Why the Fuss?)

Every webpage or search engine has it but where did it come from and why is it significant? let's explore the history of the hyperlink.
Hyperlink is an old concept with sources as old as 1960 #citation needed# but became actualized by Berners-Lee through his invention of the World Wide Web.

Q & A: The World Wide Web

  • What are the similarities and differences between hypertext as an idea (a rhizomatic, associative, way to explore non-linear storytelling) and hypertext as it's mostly used online?
  • Why do you think hypertext-based storytelling didn't take the form that Nelson and Engelbart initially imagined it would?
  • How are the first webpages different from webpages today? What do you think accounts for these differences?
  • Do you think the model of 'the Information Superhighway' or 'surfing the Web' is more appropriate for understanding the Web today? Why?
  • What were your first experiences with the Web?
  • Was it difficult to adjust to the associative, non-linear style of the Web, or did it feel natural?
